Taliban or Religious Right?

I originally wrote this in September 2010, before the midterm elections. I was attempting to show what it was going to be like if the Republicans came to power in the midterms. Sadly, I was correct. With the contraception debate going on, it is even more relevant now.

This is the second of two articles exploring religion in our politics and the influence it has and still does have on our national policies.

Debunking the Right-Wing Myth Machine

The Republican, conservative, right-wing myth machine has constructed a world not based in reality. In fact, for the most part, the world they have constructed is exactly opposite of the way the world actually is. The right-wing’s myth machine works so well, that there are things “that everyone knows” that are based on lies and are factually inaccurate.

Myth 1: Democrats are “tax and spend” liberals. Republicans are fiscal conservatives that are the only ones capable of spending the government’s money in a fiscally responsible manner.

Marines Spearhead Major Afghanistan Offensive

“Marines in helicopters landed in Marjah district, the last big Taliban stronghold in Helmand province, in the first hours of a NATO campaign to impose government control on rebel-held areas before U.S. forces start a planned 2011 drawdown.

They fired at least four rockets at militants who attacked from compounds near the bazaar in Marjah town. Hours later, the area was still gripped by the firefight.

There was one Marine casualty in the unit in which a Reuters correspondent was embedded. In their house nearby, a family huddled in one room, laundry flapping on the line outside.”

Republican Party or American Taliban?

When comparing the Republican Party and the Taliban, one finds that in some respects there is very little difference.

Let’s start with the obvious, fear. Terrorists use fear or terror, to further their goals. They do this by blowing themselves up or blowing up planes and buildings, etc. and killing people indiscriminately.

Republicans on the other hand, use fear to get the citizens in this country to support and vote for them. They do this by trying to paint the Democrats as weak on terror and national defense. Or by saying there are death panels in the health care bill. They are very successful at this form of treachery. Why the Democrats don’t hit back harder at the lies the Republicans tell, and the fear mongering they do.
