Rick Santorum has been saying some things on the campaign trail that most people find to be outlandish and outside the mainstream of American politics.
But is it?
Santorum has labeled himself very conservative, and his rhetoric matches that description perfectly. He is against public education. He thinks they should be all private schools. Santorum thinks the public higher education system is there for the left to indoctrinate the young people in this country and to turn them away from their faith. He doesn’t believe in global climate change, or evolution. He wants creationism taught in schools and prayer allowed.
Rick Santorum would like nothing better than to get rid of the country’s entire social safety net by privatizing part of it, (Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security), and abolish others like unemployment insurance. He would also like to get rid of the government agencies that keep Americans safe: The EPA, the USDA, the FDA, the Consumer Protection Bureau, etc.
He is against contraceptives and abortions in all cases, (even rape, incest, and if the mother’s life is in danger). He is also against sex outside of marriage and of course; homosexuals. Rick Santorum believes there should be government agencies and laws to regulate all of these “moral lapses”. (His words, not mine).
He believes that God orchestrates everything. He believes that everyone that opposes him is evil and doing Satan’s work. He believes that himself and the people who agree with him are here to do God’s work by battling Satan and Satan’s minions; who are probably the entire political left in this country. He believes that this country should be run according to his cherry-picked interpretation of the Bible.
Now you are probably saying to yourself that those positions are extreme and way outside of the mainstream. You would be partially correct. Anyone outside of the Republican Party and the conservatives in this country thinks that way. The conservatives and those in the Republican Party see those positions as goals to be met sometime in the future.
If you take the Republican Party’s political and “social” positions to their logical conclusion, where you end up is exactly where Santorum is today. He isn’t in the fringe; he is just ahead of the rest of his party.
The Republican leadership is trying to distance themselves from Rick Santorum’s views, labeling them as extreme. It isn’t because they don’t agree with Santorum, it’s that it isn’t time to reveal that part of their plan yet. The Republicans and conservatives have been slowly pulling this country to the right for decades. Back in the 1980s they developed a long – range plan to turn this into a conservative Christian – based country. They have been moving the country in that direction ever since. The plan has moved slowly enough that people haven’t even realized what has been happening; until now that is. The American people are beginning to wake up and realize that where this country is today is not the place that most people want us to be.
So, is Rick Santorum being extreme or is he just being honest? The answer is yes. Yes, he is being extreme for today, though his positions won’t be in the future if the Republicans get their way. So yes, he is also being honest. Honest about where the Republican Party wants this country to end up. He is just speaking the truth a little too early for the Republican leadership’s tastes.
Some of Santorum’s more notable statements.
“Satan has his sights on the U.S. ”
“… prenatal tests for birth defects and other problems actually lead to abortions.”
“…global warming is a plot by “radical environmentalists” to “consolidate power.”
