Cardinal Dolan Threatens To Stop Helping The Needy Over Mandate

The Obama administration’s mandate for insurance companies to cover birth control has become a huge issue for the Catholic Church. They claim it is against their doctrine to provide birth control.

The original rule generally allowed churches and other houses of worship to opt out, but kept the requirement in place for religiously affiliated nonprofits, including hospitals, colleges and charities.

After an uproar from religious leaders, Obama softened the mandate by requiring the insurance companies pay for birth control for all religious – affiliated institutions.

What If Jesus Meant All That Stuff?

An excellent article from Shane Claiborne first published in Esquire magazine.

From the editors: This radical Christian’s ministry for the poor, The Simple Way, has gotten him in some trouble with his fellow Evangelicals. We asked him to address those who don’t believe

To all my nonbelieving, sort-of-believing, and used-to-be-believing friends: I feel like I should begin with a confession. I am sorry that so often the biggest obstacle to God has been Christians. Christians who have had so much to say with our mouths and so little to show with our lives. I am sorry that so often we have forgotten the Christ of our Christianity.

Joe Horn From Texas Got Away With Premeditated Murder

Ever since the murder of Trayvon Martin, the nation has learned a lot about “stand your ground” laws in over two dozen states.

Here is the audio from a 911 call made by Joe Horn as he actually told the 911 operator he was going to murder two people in cold blood. Due to the “stand your ground” law in Texas, he got away with it.

Is this what our country has become? A nation of murdering vigilantes? No matter who you are, if you have even the smallest shred of humanity, you have to know these murders were wrong. No piece of property is worth someone’s life. Period.

Taliban or Religious Right?

I originally wrote this in September 2010, before the midterm elections. I was attempting to show what it was going to be like if the Republicans came to power in the midterms. Sadly, I was correct. With the contraception debate going on, it is even more relevant now.

This is the second of two articles exploring religion in our politics and the influence it has and still does have on our national policies.

Religion In Politics

With the contraception debate going on in this country, it is a reminder of how much control religion has over our laws and our government. It also reminds us of how much more influence certain religious groups would like to have over our government and laws.

I am talking about the Religious Right in general and the Catholic Church in particular. (Some people differentiate between Christian Right and Religious Right. I don’t. I see them as just different degrees of the same thing).

Before current birth-control fight, Republicans backed mandates

My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts!

Seriously. Are these people on crack? GOP…hypocrisy is thy name!

“Reporting from Washington—

Since President Obama moved to require Catholic hospitals and universities to offer their employees contraceptive health benefits, Republicans have rushed to accuse the administration of an unprecedented attack on religious freedoms.

None has been more forceful than former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who accused Obama of “a direct violation of the 1st Amendment.” But years before the current partisan firestorm, GOP lawmakers and governors around the country, including Huckabee, backed similar mandates.
